The collector’s guide to Marketplace
Rare finds are a numbers game: more regions, more phrasings and more often.
1. Widen the net
Your local area might see one listing a month for the thing you collect. The whole country might see one a day. A coast-to-coast sweep turns luck into a routine.
2. Search the way sellers write
People clearing out a relative’s house rarely know brand names. Search the generic description (“old wooden radio”, “retro chair”) as well as the maker.
3. Timing
Check newest listings early in the day and at weekends, when estate clear-outs and moving sales go up. Save your sweep and use “New since…” to see only what’s fresh.
4. Regional pricing
Prices vary by region. Classic cars and tools are often cheaper in rural areas, and design furniture in smaller cities. Compare across regions on your finds board before you commit.
5. Safe long-distance deals
- Video calls to inspect the item live.
- Prefer in-person collection or insured freight that you book yourself.
- Avoid sellers who insist on deposits, gift cards or wire transfers.
